On a sunny but fresh Sunday morning we made our way down to Mange Tout in Brighton’s North Laines. We were en route to watch the marathon runners after we’d eaten so we wanted to make sure we had a substantial meal inside us to for some serious spectating.
The lanes were quiet with most people either avoiding Brighton because of the marathon or heading in later when the number of runners along the seafront would be at its greatest. As the sun was out it meant that the outdoor seating became very popular shortly after we arrived and added to the whole feel of a French restaurant. The sun was also beaming into the tastefully decorated main dining area and by 10:30 the place was in full swing! As there were 8 of us we’d had the foresight to book a table.
The menu had a quote from their head chef that filled us with hope – “The secret of our tasty breakfast – The ingredients: fresh, local and best quality. Then there is also the cooking!”
Also the breakfast is served until 4pm! Excellent.
The menu offered a great selection of breakfast options – all with French titles and the English descriptions immediately below. There was something for everyone from a selection of croissants, to a beautifully presented fresh fruit salad or the “Complete Mange Tout – Sussex bacon, Toulouse sausage, sautéed mushrooms, roasted tomato and two eggs any way on toast”
Despite it being a late Sunday breakfast the service was a little too laid back for me. The staff, although friendly and knowledgeable were slow to take our initial drinks orders which was not a great first impression. That said everything else was spot on. The coffee was excellent, the food came out hot and freshly prepared with the Toulouse sausage being a real star of the show.
A plain croissant was just £1.80 but the Complete Mange Tout wasn’t cheap coming in at just under £10, as we always say, we don’t begrudge paying for good quality, locally sourced and perfectly executed food. Mange Tout really hit the mark for us and we would certainly recommend it for a lazy Sunday brunch.
