Scrumdiddlyyum – the home of homemade cakes and desserts, Bolney, West Sussex

Scrumdiddlyyum is an delicious business creation based in Bolney West Sussex, and for the last 2 years has been churning out incredible puds pies and cakes for the people of Sussex and beyond.  Last year local entrepreneur Lizzy Seward was awarded Bright FM’s ‘Best New Business’ award and her company run out of her farmhouse kitchen in Bolney continues to thrive.  After the sampling the best banoffee pie I have literally ever eaten, I caught up with Lizzy (the love child of Willy Wonka and Betty Crocker) to find out more about her and her Scrumdiddlyyum business.

What is Scrumdiddlyyum? An award winning business! Just kidding but I did win Bright FM’s best new business award this year. Scrumdiddlyyum is a scrummy yummy home cooked desserts based business.

How long has Scrumdiddlyyum been running? Officially 2 years 1st July.  It really has flown by!

What was your inspiration for the idea?  Being made redundant!  I saw it as an opportunity to get out there and so something myself.  It was the best decision I’ve ever made (touch wood).

What do you love most about the job?  Making people happy.  For me, there is no greater feeling in the world than making people happy with the food I make.  It makes everything worth while.

Is it your full-time job?  Sure is.

Why should someone use Scrumdiddlyyum over all the competition that’s out there? For its personal service. I pride myself on building a personal relationship with each of my customer’s trade or individual. Everyone is important to me and I welcome feedback to help myself and scrumdiddlyyum improve and build on what we’ve achieved so far.

What’s been your biggest achievement to date? Surviving in a recession!  I once read somewhere if you can start and build a successful business in a recession you’ve got a basis for a good idea. Winning bright fm’s best new business 2011 and being recognised for my work.  I cried.  Think it was the realisation that I’m actually achieving a dream of running my own business.

Do you have a signature dish?  What is it?  Not really. I just say Sugar!   But my best sellers are the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake and lemon drizzle sponge cake.

What food would best describe you? Oh difficult…. I love lots of things but not rice! Yuck!

Who is your biggest inspiration?  Have to say my mum and Charlie and the chocolate factory - The original of course!

What would be your last meal?  A Plate of Strawberries from my family pick your own farm. The best you’d ever have tasted. Oh and maybe some ice-cream, probably chocolate.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Sussex?  I love all the independent pubs around but probably my local the Eight Bells Bolney. Best Venison burger and chips EVER! (TSR – we need to try that!)

What we can gather after meeting Lizzy and sampling some of her cakes and desserts is that this is something that she genuinely loves to do.  This is a business that’s driven by passion and dedication to a real skill and craft.  Scrumdiddlyyum offers a friendly and fully bespoke personalised service using the very best ingredients on offer.  We love that unlike many larger names is this industry; she doesn’t charge the earth either.  It undercuts most of the competition on price, yet tastes more authentic coming from a real home in the heart of Sussex using local produce.

*These are cool, if you book Lizzy to make your wedding cake she’ll bring round cup cake samples of different flavours to try!  I high-jacked a friends cake tasting and can confirm the lemon drizzle was my favourite!

What we also think is marvellous, is this isn’t just for people that want a beautiful wedding cake or a dessert for 50 people at a village fete.  Of course Lizzy can do all these things, but if you’re having a dinner party or afternoon tea with friends you want to impress, it’s just as easy to call up and order a fresh Victoria Sponge or lemon drizzle cake for the occasion.  What you get is the best homemade version on the planet.  Think we’re exaggerating?  Give Lizzy a call today order something today, I promise you will not be disappointed.

* A Banoffee Pie that needs to be tried to appreciate just how good is.  I will welcome any challenger who thinks they can do better.  Probably the best £15 you can spend this year.
